Lewis-Arriola Elementary School has once again received the John Irwin School of Excellence Award, an honor that recognizes schools demonstrating consistent and exceptional academic achievement.

The Montezuma-Cortez School District announced the award Wednesday. The school has earned the John Irwin School of Excellence Award multiple times over the years.

Lewis-Arriola Elementary earned the distinction by receiving an “Exceeds Expectations” rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the Colorado School Performance Frameworks. The rating reflects strong performance in mathematics, English language arts and science.

The school is led by Principal Angela Sauk, who oversees a team of teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff.

“Under the leadership of Principal Angi Sauk, Lewis-Arriola Elementary has built a culture centered on high expectations, strong instructional practices and meaningful relationships with students and families,” the district said. “This consistent focus has resulted in sustained academic growth and achievement, positioning the school as a model of excellence in the region.”

Superintendent Eddie Ramirez highlighted the collective effort of the Lewis-Arriola team in maintaining high standards across the district through shared effort and data‑driven instruction.

“This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the entire Lewis‑Arriola team.”
