La Plata County Sheriff’s Office warns of IRS phone scam

Multiple reports of fraudulent calls in the region

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam circulating in the region in which the caller poses as the IRS, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

A message left on phones warns callers they will be taken into custody by police. The message also says there are serious allegations against individuals and names those people. The Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of fraudulent calls.

The caller requests potential victims to call back to discuss the case further before threatening legal action. A phone number to reach the scammers is given as (321) 221-5616.

Other numbers that have been provided include (240) 251-5052 and (321) 221-5616.

Sheriff’s Capt. Ed Aber said the IRS does not contact people by phone.

“Please do not give any of your personal information over the phone unless you initiate the call to a business,” the news release said. “At times, they will ask you to wire money or send a money gram. Do not send any money to these people.”

Anyone with questions or concerns about a particular call can contact central dispatch at 385-2900.
