J&J vaccine offered May 12 at county annex

Southwest Health System, which manages Southwest Memorial Hospital, in Cortez, administered its 10,000th COVID-19 vaccine on April 27.
No appointment necessary; vaccine is single dose

The Montezuma County Public Health Department will hold a Johnson & Johnson vaccination clinic May 12 at the County Annex building at 107 N. Chestnut from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The J&J vaccine is a single-dose vaccine for the COVID-19 virus, and is available to anyone 18 years and older. No appointment is necessary.

“Vaccines are available to anyone 18 or older who wants one,” said Vicki Shaffer, county public information officer.

They are offered at public vaccination clinics, or can be obtained anytime by calling the county health department at 970-565-3056.

As of May 9, 48% of Montezuma County residents eligible for the vaccine have received at least one dose, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

In Dolores County, 37% of eligible residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. In La Plata County, 63% have received at least one vaccine dose.

There have been numerous vaccinations clinics in Montezuma County, including from the health department, Southwest Health System, Axis Health System, and mobile clinics.

On April 27, Southwest Health System gave its 10,000th vaccination for COVID-19, according to a Facebook post. SHS has completed 57 vaccination clinics averaging 176 patients per clinic.

Pfizer was recently authorized to provide a COVID-19 vaccine for use with children ages 12-15. That vaccine is not yet available in Montezuma County, but it is expected to arrive soon, Shaffer said.
