Imagination Library: Giving children the gift of reading

Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free books to children from birth to their 5th birthday. Books are chosen by a panel of childhood literacy experts and purchased by the Dolly Parton Foundation with the postage paid by a local sponsoring group at a cost of about $30 per child per year.

The books are addressed to the child, and each month a book is delivered, at no cost to the family. Each child enrolled in the program receives their own book to keep, and now parents have the option of choosing Spanish-language books for their child.

We currently have 697 children enrolled in the local program, but we know there are other eligible youngsters who are not registered, thus not having the opportunity to build a library of books of their very own.

Applications can be picked up at any of the county libraries or the Montezuma County Health Department. The program is free, and any child who lives in Montezuma or Dolores counties is eligible to apply. The younger the child, the more free books they will receive up to their 5th birthday.

Let’s give all our children the gift of reading and sign them up as soon as they are born.
