Ignacio boys beat Dove Creek

The Ignacio boys and girls basketball teams both hosted league foe Dove Creek on Thursday.

Dove Creek won the girls’ game 69-56, but Ignacio’s boys were hot beyond the arch and beat the Bulldogs, 67-50.

The Ignacio boys led Dove Creek 32-21 at halftime thanks to a pair of Gabe Tucson 3-pointers, two from Devante Montoya and one from Eppie Quintana in the second quarter, which helped Ignacio take the lead after trailing 14-13 after one.

Ignacio extended its lead to 49-37 heading into the fourth and then added to it.

Tucson had 18 points in the half and finished with 30. Quintana scored 17, Montoya had six, and Phillip Quintana scored five. Kade Hankins led Dove Creek with 19 points, Tanner Williams added 11, and Chorbin Cressler chipped in six.

In the girls’ game, Ignacio and Dove Creek were tied 13-13 after the first quarter. Dove Creek, however, outscored IHS 25-16 in the second and 18-9 in the third. The Bobcats won the fourth quarter, 18-13, but were unable to overtake Dove Creek. The Bulldogs won 69-56.

Laci Brunson scored 21 points to lead Ignacio. Avaleena Nanaeto scored 13, and Darlyn Mendoza-Lechuga and Harmony Reynolds scored nine for IHS.

Dove Creek’s Lexi Gray led all scorers with 25 points. Kylie Gatlin and Trista Barnett both scored 17 for the Bulldogs.
