As of Tuesday, April 15, there’s two new employees at the Housing Authority of Montezuma County, and another will come on board next week.

A resident manager at Calkins Commons and a Housing Choice Voucher Specialist have been onboarded, and an interim executive director who recently retired from another housing authority will start Monday, April 21, said Jim Candelaria, a board member on the housing authority’s governing board.

The interim director has promised to stay until the board finds a permanent executive director to fill the position, said Candelaria.

“I may be being optimistic and not realistic, but my hope is that it’s filled in four to six months,” he said of the permanent executive director role. “Again, I’m probably being optimistic, but at least we found someone to fill the role.”

In two weeks, another occupancy specialist will join the team.

Candelaria said the board has been “working really hard” to fill the positions, and that the only remaining opening is for an assistant executive director.

At the April 15 Board of County Commissioner’s meeting, Candelaria called the new employees “rock stars,” and reiterated their qualifications in a phone call with The Journal on Wednesday, April 16.

“Nobody’s lost housing, and everything is still functioning,” he said. “They’re the best applicants we had.”
