A house fire broke out south of Dolores Friday about 4:45 p.m.

Dolores Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze off County Road 29 along with the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire was coming from the roof when emergency responders arrived, officials said. A plume of black smoke could be seen miles away.

Sheriff Steve Nowlin said there were no reported injuries, and the fire is controlled. Victim assistance responded, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Deputy Thomas Frost said the male resident and his dog were safe.

The residence that burned is on top of Roatcap Hill off County Road 29. The road was closed at County Road P for public safety, Frost said.

He said during the fire, a nearby propane tank was a concern.
