Hesperus Ski Area opens with 21-inch base, more on the way

Mountain west of Durango relies entirely on natural snowfall
Hesperus Ski Area will open to skiing Tuesday, on New Year’s Day, after receiving enough snow to start operations.

Hesperus Ski Area has finally received enough snow to open for the season, a spokeswoman for the ski area said Monday.

With a base of 21 inches of snow and another 15 inches forecast over the next two days, Hesperus Ski Area planned to open for tubing Monday and skiing Tuesday, spokeswoman Kim Oyler wrote in an email.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the ski area reported 4 inches of new snow. The Hesperus rental shop, ski and ride school, and tubing hill will also be open. The ski area was scheduled to hold its opening day Dec. 21.

“We’re excited to get the ski season underway,” Sam Williams, senior director of mountain operations at Hesperus Ski Area and Purgatory Resort, said in a prepared statement. “With all this fresh snow, skiers and snowboarders can have a great start to the new year at Hesperus.”

Hesperus Ski Area relies entirely on natural snowfall for its skiable terrain, which features 26 trails and a double chairlift on 160 acres. It’s located about 12 miles west of Durango.
