Emergency workers responded to what was being described as a head-on crash Friday evening on Colorado Highway 172 northwest of Durango-La Plata County Airport.
The crash was reported after 5 p.m. near mile marker 21. The road was closed in both directions.
Mercy Hospital’s Flight For Life helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks aircraft movements around the world.
According to early scanner reports, the crash was a head-on involving a Kia Spectra and a white vehicle. The scanner chatter reported a fatality and several people with injuries. Children were also reportedly in one of the vehicles.
The State Patrol confirmed it was a head-on crash near the airport. Capt. John Trentini asked drivers to avoid the area and take alternative routes to get around the closure.
