Sheriff: Collision kills one, injures another

A head-on collision Thursday morning killed one person and injured another on U.S. Highway 160 east of Cortez near the fairgrounds, according to Montezuma County Sheriff Steven Nowlin.

U.S. 160 is closed to eastbound and westbound traffic, and drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes.

Traffic is backed up along the highway at the fairgrounds and the Colorado Department of Transportation was redirecting vehicles, Nowlin said.

It was not known when the highway would reopen.

UPDATE 4:38 p.m: Road closed between County Road 29 and County Road 34, 4 miles east of Cortez. Colorado Department of Transportation is detouring cars.
