A 32-year-old Durango man appears to have died by suicide Sunday in the Durango West II subdivision, said La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith.

The man was identified as Jason Alan Richards.

Richards was at home with a woman who was either his girlfriend or wife in the 200 block of Pine Ridge Loop when she stepped outside and he apparently used a .45 caliber handgun to shoot himself, Smith said. Authorities recovered the gun.

Investigators said foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Richards was dead when deputies arrived shortly after 4:35 p.m. Sunday, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

He has a mother, sister and three children who live in Wyoming.
