The Grow Your Library program kicks off in Cortez on July 23 with storytime at 9:30 a.m. at the Cortez Farmers Market, Main and S. Elm St.

Each child who attends will receive a free book and Highlights magazine courtesy of the Kids Need to Read program. They will also learn how they can use their own love of reading to help the Cortez Public Library earn even more free books in the future.

“The importance of reading extends far beyond the mechanics,” said KNTR director Denise Gary said. “Its greatest power is determined by how each person uses reading to shape their lives. Inspiring children to read at an early age allows that vital, lifelong process to begin.”

Kids Need to Read has teamed with board member Gary Mlodzik and his wife, Tina, to launch a library donation project that will deliver free books and story time to local libraries during the couple’s travels.

“I developed the Grow Your Library program to introduce a giving culture in the youth we meet at literacy events,” said Mlodzik. “Putting a book in the hands of a child and allowing them to expand their horizons is magical.”

Thanks to Kids Need to Read, 200 new books have been delivered to the library just in time for the summer reading program. The selection includes an excellent variety from picture books to young adult titles.

The Kids Need to Read program aspires to help disadvantaged children by providing inspiring book collections and engaging literacy programs to underfunded schools, libraries, and organizations across the nation.
