Greatness requires honesty about our history

Make America great by being honest, facing the truth and owning our history. Some leaders and citizens want to erase and rewrite history. Many whites think their race is superior and refuse to admit any wrongdoing, avoiding the shame or guilt the truth may bring. Some think their religion is superior and won’t accept what’s been done in the name of their lord. Some think their political party is superior and won’t accept responsibility for the immoral and illegal acts of their leaders.

America was founded on religious freedom – and most of these founders owned slaves. Slave owners believed they could do anything they wanted with their “property.” Slaves were whipped, raped and lynched. The lie that Africans did not have souls absolved slave owners of guilt.

More truths about our history: the savage treatment of Indigenous people. We as a “great” nation massacred them and removed them from their lands, purposefully killing them with diseases and whiskey, wiping out their food sources. Native children were forcibly taken from their parents to be acculturated in boarding schools where they were converted, raped and killed.

Our “great” nation’s foreign policies: usurping democratic governments in Panama, El Salvador, Venezuela and Iran in 1953, putting our chosen puppet leaders in power, then stealing their resources.

It has always been about greed. All over the world, native peoples have been and continue to be exploited by racist, power-hungry corporations, governments, cartels and religious zealots. Humanity must face the truth. Be honest.
