Are you interested in railroad history? Does that Galloping Goose railcar that you see in Dolores peak your curiosity? Would you like talking to people who come from around the world to see Goose No. 5? Are you available about a half day each week to work in the gift store and museum?

If you answered "yes" to these questions, go to the Galloping Goose Historical Society's open house on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 421 Railroad Ave., Dolores. You will learn about the fun and benefits of volunteering. You will have the chance to talk with current volunteers, be given a ride on Galloping Goose No. 5, and enjoy light refreshments. You do not need to be a railroad expert to volunteer. All training is provided.

Founded in the Town of Dolores in 1987, the Historical Society operates a free railroad museum and runs all-day excursions on the historic Galloping Goose No. 5 railcar several times a year. Volunteers have the opportunity to ride free as a concessionaire on Goose excursions. About 2,500 people visit the museum each year, coming from throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The museum and railcar were built with volunteer labor. In 1991, GGHS volunteers built a replica of the Dolores Train Depot, where the museum, gift store and GGHS offices are now located. In 1997 and 1998, volunteers completely restored Galloping Goose No. 5. This historic railcar is now a very popular attraction, operating on the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad in July and October and on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad during Railfest in August. A dedicated volunteer pool is active in all aspects of the Society's work.
