FARMINGTON – The Farmington High School softball team will have a new head coach when they take the field next spring.

Isaiah George, who has served as an assistant coach for the Scorpions softball team for each of the last three years, was elevated to the position of head coach. The announcement of the move was released last week and posted to the school’s official social media pages.

George, 26, replaces Tim Trotter, who served as the school’s softball coach since 2015.

“I’m just excited to have this opportunity,” George said. “I’ve learned a lot from so many coaches both as a player and an assistant.”

George, who also was a student at Farmington High School, takes over a program that has had winning records in each of the last two seasons, but came up short in state tournament action.

Last year, the Scorpions softball team finished with a regular season record of 18-11, going 5-5 in District 2-5A. They suffered back-to-back losses in the opening rounds of the Class 5A state tournament, falling short in the opening game to district rival La Cueva before being eliminated by Cibola.

George is excited for the opportunity to get started with his team during the offseason to prepare for a run at a state title.

“We’ve got a busy offseason coming, and that’s good for us,” George said. “I’ve gotten to know the girls on this team and am excited to get back to work.”

Under Trotter, the Scorpions softball team played for the Class 5A state title in 2018, losing to Artesia. Trotter achieved a record of 100-87-1 during his tenure.

The Scorpions softball team has amassed eight state titles dating back to 1994, including back-to-back championship teams in 1994 and 1995, as well as 1997 and 1998. The Scorpions also won three straight state titles during the 2002 through 2004 campaigns.

The eight state titles puts Farmington’s softball program among the top in the state, trailing only a handful of teams with more state championships in the sport.

“There’s a lot of great tradition and history with this program, and I think it’s a great opportunity to bring back that history of excellence with this team.”
