Reigning state champions roll over Aztec

FARMINGTON – The Gallup High School softball team earned its eighth win from as many district games this week, cruising at home over Aztec High School by a final of 16-1.

Here’s a recap of some of the softball action from local and area teams.

Gallup 16, Aztec 1

The defending state champion Gallup High School softball team remains unbeaten within District 1-4A this season, completing a season sweep over Aztec at home by a final of 16-1.

The Lady Bengals (15-9 overall, 8-0 District) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding eight runs in the second inning of the four-inning run rule victory.

Gallup has outscored its district rivals this season by a margin of 97-4. Currently ranked third in the 4A classification by MaxPreps, the Lady Bengals trail only Artesia and Silver in the latest poll. The team has already secured a district championship and will defend its state title when the postseason tournament gets underway on May 5.

The victory over Aztec completes a season sweep for the Lady Bengals, who beat the Lady Tigers at home by a final of 17-0 on April 18.

Aztec (11-12 overall, 4-5 District) has one final game on its regular season schedule, heading to Kirtland Central High School at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Bloomfield 15, Kirtland Central 4

Trinity McMurry scored three runs to pace the Bloomfield High School softball team to a 15-4 rout at home Tuesday afternoon over Kirtland Central.

Thalia Tso and Nevaeh Garcia each drove in a pair of runs, while Caitlin Zepeda, Nevaeh Archuleta, Lydia Nelson and Gerilynn Delegarito each scored twice in the five-inning run rule victory.

Amia Goins allowed six hits and two walks over four innings to earn the victory for the Lady Bobcats (12-13 overall, 6-3 District). Goins struck out four Kirtland Central hitters before Garcia came on in relief to finish the contest.

Bloomfield is ranked No. 10 in the state at Class 4A according to most recent MaxPreps poll and should be in a position to reach the state tournament. The Lady Bobcats are ranked ahead of district rival Aztec (No. 11) in the poll and trail both third-ranked Gallup and seventh-ranked Miyamura.

Bloomfield will look to finish the regular season strong at 6 p.m. Thursday when they host Miyamura. Bloomfield outscored the Lady Patriots 16-12 earlier this month in the first district matchup of the season for both teams

Miyamura 11, Shiprock 1

Shantaya Belone and C.C. Jiminzes each drove in three runs for the Miyamura High School softball team as they pulled clear of Shiprock in a district game Tuesday afternoon at Miyamura High School.

Jiminez went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double while Autumn Boggs was putting on a clinic from the dish, striking out nine Lady Chieftains hitters and giving up only a pair of walks over five innings of work.

Miyamura (15-8 overall, 6-2 District) scored four runs in both the first and sixth innings of the contest, completing a season sweep over Shiprock. The Lady Patriots rolled over Shiprock last week in the first meeting of the season between the two teams.

Shiprock (4-15 overall, 0-9 District) will wrap up the season at home on Thursday when they face Gallup. The Lady Bengals blanked Shiprock 15-0 on April 15 in the only meeting between the two schools this season.

Navajo Prep sweeps Thoreau in doubleheader

The Navajo Prep softball team kept its District 1-3A unbeaten streak intact, rolling over Thoreau in a home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles pounded Thoreau 32-2 in the opening contest before closing out the afternoon with a 15-0 rout over the Lady Hawks in the nightcap.

Navajo Prep improves to 16-4 on the season (8-0 District) and are currently ranked No. 6 in the state at Class 3A by MaxPreps. The Lady Eagles will continue the district campaign on Tuesday at home against Zuni.
