Forest Service seeks comments on vegetation management project

The Journal

The Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest seeks public comment on a revised draft environmental assessment for the Lone Pine vegetation management project in Dolores County.

The project proposes sanitation and salvage treatments, precommercial thinning, commercial thinning and single-tree selection treatments, as well as oak thinning and pile burning on up to 36,810 acres of the 66,719 acres Lone Pine analysis area. The proposal allows for treatment outside the 36,810 acres if conditions warrant it. To determine whether additional treatments should occur, an adaptive management approach would be used.

Comments will be accepted until July 16.

Written comments should be submitted to: Derek Padilla, Dolores District ranger, 29211 Colorado Highway 184, Dolores, CO 81321, or hand-delivered to the Dolores District office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Comments may also be faxed to: Attn: District Ranger, 882-6841. Electronic comments should be emailed to comments-rocky-mountain-san-juan-mancos-dolores@fs.fed.us.

The environmental assessment describing the proposed action, with maps, is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=54682. For more information, contact David Casey at 882-7296 or david.casey2@usda.gov.
