The 14th annual Turkey Trot, a race held to benefit the For Pets Sake humane society, will be held in Cortez on Thursday.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. in Parque De Vida, and the 1-kilometer race starts at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their dogs and wear Thanksgiving-themed costumes. Registration is $20, and runners will receive a T-shirt with their entry.

“This is not a serious run,” Cheri Valle, president of the humane society, said. “It’s mostly just for families and dogs to walk and run around on Thanksgiving.”

The event is being sponsored by several local businesses, whose donations will pay for the T-shirts. The rest of the proceeds, board member Marian Rohman said, will go to the humane society. Last year’s run raised almost $4,000 for the organization. More than 100 people participated in that race, and Rohman said she expects a similar number this year.

For Pets Sake provides foster care for cats and dogs in need of adoption and provides pet owners with financial assistance for spaying, neutering and emergency veterinary care, among other services.
