As summer evenings continue to get warmer, the Friends of Carpenter and Cortez Parks and Recreation Department are inviting the community to experience the magical glow of fireflies at Carpenter Natural Area.
Guided walking tours are scheduled for Saturday, June 14; Wednesday, June 18; Saturday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 25 from 8:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 1202 Lebanon Road. These tours allow attendees to stroll along Carpenter Trail, learning about the ecological role and biology of fireflies in Montezuma County and the surrounding areas.
On June 18, participants can also experience a pre-tour lecture by entomologist Christy Bills from the Natural History Museum of Utah. This lecture will be held at the Cortez Public Library from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The talk will explore the science behind fireflies’ bioluminescence and their significance in local ecosystems.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision, bug spray to ward off pests and closed-toe shoes for a comfortable walk. With limited spaces available, early registration is encouraged. Registration can be done through the Cortez Recreation Center in person or online at www.cortezco.gov/709/events.
Don’t miss this chance to witness fireflies illuminating the night in Cortez.
