Fire restrictions lifted on San Juan National Forest

Smoke rises from the Long Draw Reservoir fire in June.

Fire restrictions on the San Juan National Forest will be lifted today, Aug. 8, thanks to widespread monsoonal moisture. This year’s Stage 1 fire restrictions, which went into effect on July 1, applied only to San National Forest lands south of U.S. Highway 160.

Whether or not fire restrictions are in effect, fire officials urge visitors to always use caution with fire in the backcountry:

Put out campfires completely every time you leave camp. Pour water on the ashes and stir until there is no smoke, and ashes are cool to the touch. Consider using a camp stove instead.Dispose of cigarette butts in a safe and appropriate container.Make sure chainsaws have working spark arresters, and carry water, a shovel, and fire extinguisher when cutting firewood.Park vehicles in areas clear of vegetation, not over dry grasses. For more information, contact the San Juan Public Lands Center, 970 247-4874.
