Farmington tennis doubles teams earn runner-up titles at state

Second-ranked Scorpions teams earn individual runner-up titles in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE – Farmington High School boys and girls doubles teams took home championship hardware this week at the New Mexico Activities Association’s state tournament held Thursday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center in Albuquerque.

The Farmington boys doubles team of Charles Briones and Conner Clark advanced to the Class 5A finals, where they lost in three sets to Thaaj Bhardwaj and Calvin VanDyke of La Cueva.

Those teams came into the Class 5A finals as the top-ranked boys doubles teams in the state at Class 5A. Briones and Clark lost only six games over the course of the first three rounds of the state tournament.

Briones and Clark won the opening set of the championship match 7-6, but lost the next final two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

In the state girls competition, the second-ranked team of Marley Deswood and Naomi Beck advanced to the Class 5A finals, where they were swept in two sets by the top-ranked duo of Cameron King and Stephanie Romero from La Cueva.

Deswood and Beck rallied from a set down in their semifinal match against Carmen Valentino and Yasmin Palomino from Santa Fe High School to reach the finals.

Beck and Deswood finished the season with an overall doubles record of 19-5.

The state tennis tournament wraps up Friday and Saturday with team competition. Farmington’s boys and girls teams come into the Class 5A finals second ranked in the state behind only La Cueva.
