FARMINGTON – The NCAA baseball tournament will feature a familiar face when action opens this week during regional competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Bradon Zastrow, a 2019 Farmington High School graduate and a leading pitcher on the Scorpions baseball team, will be on the hill this weekend for the University of Arizona as the Wildcats look to advance deeper into the tournament.
The Wildcats will open play in the regional tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday when they face Texas Christian University, followed by matchups against Santa Clara University and University of Arkansas, ranked third in the nation. The Friday evening first-round game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
Zastrow, who compiled a record of 6-5 this season for the Wildcats, spurred the team into the NCAA tournament with a complete game, five-strikeout performance in the Pac-12 semifinal game in which Arizona topped 14-4. Zastrow threw a season-high 107 pitches in the win, allowing 10 hits and no walks.
Arizona advanced to the Pac-12 conference championship game off that win, but lost to the University of Oregon by a final of 14-5.
Zastrow has appeared in 17 games for the Wildcats this season, and is second on the team with 56 strikeouts.
As a Scorpion, Zastrow lettered three years in baseball under head coach Sean Trotter, pitching and playing center field, and picked up All-State honors as a senior in 2019, when he went 4-0 as a starting pitcher.
Zastrow then went on to Pima Community College in Tucson. Over 27 career appearances (20 starts) with the Aztecs, Zastrow notched an 8-7 record, throwing more than 107 innings and earning 3.85 ERA with over 110 strikeouts.
The NCAA baseball tournament, much like the men’s basketball tournament features 64 teams, with groups of four assigned to different regions around the country in a double-elimination format.
In the Wildcats’ second season under head coach Chip Hale, Arizona put together an at-large resume that included a runner-up finish in the Pac-12 Baseball Tournament, 20 wins against Top 100 RPI teams, the 25th toughest schedule in the nation and more.
Arizona's selection marks the 42nd NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, the sixth most in the nation.
