Wayne Lorenz will present “Ancient Pompeii – Archaeological Features of Water Systems” at the next meeting of the San Juan Basin Archaeological Society.

The meeting is on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. A social will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Archaeological features of the water systems that the ancient Romans built to serve Pompeii and the communities around Naples Bay, Italy, will be discussed. One of the largest aqueduct systems in the Roman Empire was constructed in the first century B.C. to serve these communities. Major aspects of the 62-mile-long Aqua Augusta aqueduct will be presented, as well as water use inside the city of Pompeii where the elite inhabitants had water plumbed into their houses.

Wayne F. Lorenz, chief Engineer of Wright Water Engineers Inc. and director of Roman Aqueduct Studies for the Wright Paleohydrological Institute, has supervised six field research visits to Pompeii. He has published the results of his Roman water engineering research in numerous journals.
