Durango to get new ‘nature-based’ hotel

Rebranded 47-room lodge aims to draw outdoor adventurers

A new 47-room “nature-based” hotel is set to open this month on north Main Avenue at the site of the former Days Inn.

The Hansji Corp., which has owned the former Days Inn property since 2022, announced in January 2024 it would convert the site at 3030 Main Ave. into the first Boundary by Terra Vi hotel, called Boundary by Terra Vi, Durango.

Terra Vi, founded by Hansji in 2020, builds hotels “perched in locations on the edge of nature,” according to its website. The property is squeezed between north Main Avenue to the west and a neighborhood to the east.

The hotel includes private rooms and several communal gathering spaces.

According to a news release from the company, the hotel will feature basic and deluxe rooms; a library with a vinyl listening lounge; a bar; a grab-and-go pantry; a shared “navigation table” for expedition planning; a “mindful movement” room for yoga and meditation; and an outdoor terrace and fire circle.

“Boundary Durango will be the ideal basecamp for experiencing the area’s world-class outdoor activities and sightseeing,” the release said.

Renovations were initially scheduled for completion by fall 2024. In December of that year, the city’s planning department told The Durango Herald that updating the aging building was proving “tricky,” and that bringing it up to code and adding parking lot landscaping delayed the project.

The building underwent “a complete renovation of all guest rooms and public spaces,” according to the company.

Seattle-based architecture and interior design firm Degen & Degen handled interior design work, and Durango-based firm Reynolds Ash + Associates Architecture & Engineering, led by project architect Elizabeth Boone, took the lead on architectural work. Terra Vi’s design team also contributed to the project.

Official opening timelines have shifted several times.

An original Jan. 29 opening date was temporarily pushed to February because of unexpected construction delays. As of Thursday, the hotel had reverted back to its original opening date of Jan. 29, a company spokesperson told the Herald.

Rates at Boundary Durango start at $119 for standard rooms and $189 for deluxe rooms.

Boundary Durango joins similar adventure-themed models in Durango, including Adventure Inn Durango and Junction Hotel and Hostel.

Junction’s website calls the hotel a “budget-friendly and cozy accommodation for adventure enthusiasts exploring the southwest,” and offers hostel- and hotel-style accommodations. A single room with two queen beds at Junction costs $80 to $100 per night, with a hostel bed in a shared room going for around $30.

The Adventure Inn Durango, which does not offer hostel-style accommodations, offers a standard room with two queen beds for around $110 per night.

The Boundary by Terra Vi Durango location is the first of many, according to the release.

Additional properties by Terra Vi are planned to open near the Grand Canyon and Yosemite in 2027 and in Glacier National Park, Montana, in 2028. Terra Vi also owns the Marble Canyon Lodge, situated along the Colorado River and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Each Terra Vi property is “inspired by the history and natural beauty of its distinct region,” according to the release.
