A 41-year-old Durango man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder for the alleged stabbing of his landlord.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said officers were dispatched to the Four Winds Motel at 20797 U.S. Highway 160 in west Durango around midnight Saturday for a disturbance.

Investigators said the disturbance began after a tenant at the motel left a voicemail with the manager to complain about a toilet that had been broken for some time and wasn’t being fixed.

But because the tenant – identified as Jarrod Angel Davenport – was so intoxicated, the manager couldn’t understand the message and went to Davenport’s room to check in, Shupe said.

After opening the door, Davenport allegedly grabbed a couple of knives out of his pocket and threatened the manager. The manager then threatened to call Davenport’s probation officer, at which time the manager was stabbed, according to police.

The manager retreated from the door and called out for someone to call 911, Shupe said. The manager then ran to his car to get a bat while Davenport continued to chase and threaten him.

It was at this time officers arrived and told both men to drop their weapons, Shupe said, which they did on command.

The manager suffered serious injuries to the chest and groin, none of which was life-threatening. He went to the hospital on his own, Shupe said.

Davenport was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault and menacing.
