Drawings, proposals sought for mural project

The Downtown Mural Community and the Cortez Cultural Center are requesting proposals from qualified artists to provide mural design and painting services for the development of a mural in the downtown area. The budget for the mural is $5,000.

The selected artist will be expected to provide a design concept based on the artist’s interpretation of a historical aspect of Cortez and the surrounding area, as well as all paint, sealer and material to complete and seal the mural, and all labor, including clean-up work. A plan for ensuring a safe work area should be submitted for approval, because work will be completed on public sidewalks.

Historical concepts would include referencing mining on the east-facing wall of Garcia & Co. Jewelers, on a depiction of the Tree of Life (Navajo) on the west-facing wall of Abundant Life. Only one mural will be completed this year, but artists are welcome to present concepts or drawings of either or both options.

The Garcia Wall is about 20 feet wide by 8 feet high, for about 160 square feet. The Abundant Life wall is about 10 feet wide by 15 feet high, for about 150 square feet, with an exterior light on the wall. The light will not be removed and should be considered in the mural design. Both walls are stucco and in good repair.

In addition to the design concept, the artist should submit a résumé of his or her experience as it may relate to mural painting, and including the ability to complete the mural in a specific time frame. References and a list of similar work or statement of ability should be included in the submittal.

Artists should submit sealed proposals with:

Exhibit A: Drawing or concept or proposed art.

Exhibit B: Detail of wall preparation, materials to be used, including acrylic paint colors and sealant (MSA varnish or equivalent, or specify), and details required for maintenance purposes, as well as résumé, references and statement of time frame.

Submittals are due by 5 p.m. Monday and should be submitted to the Cortez Cultural Center executive director, 25 N. Market, Cortez, CO 81321. Proposals must be sealed and clearly marked, “Proposal — Downtown Mural Project.”

Proposals will be evaluated after June 28 by the following criteria:

How well the mural design fits the theme identified in the bid proposal.

Qualifications and experience of the artist.

Timeline for completion and ability to complete mural in a timely fashion.

Materials and paints.

References.

A final award will be made by July 2.
