The Dolores School District Re-4A is implementing a new curricular series for students in kindergarten through third grade.

It’s called the Core Knowledge sequence, and it aims to align learning and curriculum from grade to grade. The possibility of adopting the curriculum was discussed a few times throughout the school year, and the Dolores school board unanimously approved the sequence at its regular meeting March 12.

According to Dolores Superintendent Lis Richard, the district underwent a curriculum audit back in 2018, and Re-4A leadership decided that a “vertically aligned and comprehensive curriculum was needed.”

The Core Knowledge sequence aims to be “content-specific,” “cumulative” and “coherent,” according to its website.

“The Sequence is intended to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade from preschool through grade eight,” the website states.

The sequence offers plans in a broad range of content, including language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, visual arts and music.

In a statement to families, Richard emphasized that the curriculum is cross-curricular, gives teachers access to a range of resources, and will allow students to build on the knowledge they gain from year to year.
