Taking its home field on a windy day for consecutive games against Navajo Prep High School, the Dolores High School baseball team based its way to one victory and one narrow loss over the course of four-plus hours on April 17.

Opening the doubleheader with junior pitcher Cameron Chavez on the mound, Dolores raced to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended that lead to 5-0 after scoring runs in the second and third frames.

Meanwhile, Chavez held Navajo Prep’s hitters in check thanks to a combination of whistling fastballs and well-located off-speed pitches, which resulted in 11 strikeouts over the course of the game. The Dolores junior pitched all seven innings and allowed just two earned runs.

The Bears were led at the plate by junior Neil Farias, who had an RBI double, and Chavez, who hammered two base hits and registered an RBI. Brennan Hite and also hit a double and two singles for Dolores, and Eric Eastman and Tel Hamilton also had hits.

In the second game of its doubleheader, Dolores lost 12-11 as both team’s offenses exploded in route to 23 total runs. Statistics for the game were unavailable as of The Journal’s press deadline.

Now 4-10 overall and 2-4 in its league, Dolores returned to the practice field in anticipation of a road matchup against Dove Creek on April 19. The Bulldogs have defeated the Bears in both matchups that have taken place between the two teams this season.
