Dolores 40 years ago

Taken from the Friday, July 26, 1974, pages of The Dolores Star

On July 23, it was discovered by Mrs. Vivian Spangler that someone had entered the Hollywood Bar located on Central Avenue and that approximately $500 was taken from the cash register, pool tables, cigarette machine and jukebox. The bar had been checked at 3 a.m. by Beverly Quine who is employed by Mrs. Spangler. Entrance was made through a hole in the roof in the back of the building and the burglars left through the back door. A new door had just been installed due to a previous break-in on June 10 when approximately $500 was taken then too. Finger prints were lifted and the investigation is continuing as the officers have several suspects.

Three resignations were received and one person hired at the regular meeting of the Board of education of the Dolores School District held last Thursday night. Resignations were received from Ronald Orr, Vera McRae and Wilda Wallace. Hired was William S. Parson and a fifth-grade teacher to replace Herb Ashbaugh. Parson started out working with the Boy Scouts in Farmington as District executive. He then taught in the Alamagordo, New Mexico public schools.

Water agreement between the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company and the Dolores Water Conservancy District recently arrived and may have been the biggest step to date in hastening progress on the Dolores project which at one time had been scheduled for start of construction as early as 1973. In a letter to the President of the MVI, the Conservancy District ratified the agreement and indicated that a court suit involving the water in the river would be withdrawn. It also revealed that final construction phase of the planning has been ordered by the Bureau of Reclamation.
