A large delegation packed the meeting room of the Board of Education for School District Re-4A Tuesday night as the board considered the rehiring of Mrs. Wilda Wallace as principal of the Dolores Elementary School. The decision was reached by board members to retain Mrs. Wallace for one year, at which time she will reach the retirement age of 65. She will be a full-time principal, however, and certain stipulations were made as to her duties including more written evaluations, and working with the career education and other projects. No salary was mentioned during the discussion, according to Board of Education president Aryol Brumley. Petitions in favor of Mrs. Wallace were presented by Dave Sanford, Phyllis Carver and Vera McRae. Richard Tibbits read a letter in support of Mrs. Wallace.
The Town Board adopted the Model Traffic Code, with an ordinance on such appearing in this week's issue of the Star, at their meeting held Monday night. Maurice Ribera read a letter to the board in protest of their handling of the building permit for the proposed car wash at 1st and Railroad.
Family and friends dropped by on Tuesday, March 12, to wish a happy 90th birthday to Fred Tibbits, a colorful pioneer. Tibbits was born in Fredriksburg County, Iowa in 1884 and came to Colorado in March of 1902 at the age of 18.
Dolores hosts the annual meeting of stockholders of Empire Electric Association here on Saturday, March 16 with displays of electrical merchandise by various merchants and other topics by organizations opening at 10 a.m.
The slate has been completed for the coming town board election which sees a vacancy for Mayor and four vacancies on the Board of Trustees. Only one candidate, V. T. Boyd, turned in a petition for the mayor vacancy.
The San Juan National Forest Supervisor is proposing a revision of the motorized vehicle travel restrictions which have been in effect on the National Forest lands during the past several years. The current proposal will broaden the restrictions somewhat, especially in the Bayfield-Vallecito area.
Patricia Lee Reed of Lebanon was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident last Thursday, March 7 at 2:45 p.m. According to Officer Bob Myers of the Colorado State Patrol, Mrs. Reed was traveling westerly one mile west of Dolores on the old highway when her pickup crossed the roadway and struck the old Dolores River Bridge abutment on the south side then went back across the road and hit the bridge railing.
