Several grants awarded to the Cortez Public Library during my tenure as children’s librarian were administered by the Colorado Department of Education. The grant money came from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency. This agency is currently being gutted by the Trump administration as they indiscriminately slash and burn.
The Cortez Public Library was able to participate in two prototype programs – “Supporting Parents in Early Literacy through Libraries” and “Growing Readers Together.”
I was privileged to be part of both these programs.
To gut this fine agency is senseless and, I daresay, ignorant.
To deny families the gift of accessing and implementing literacy practices with their children is negligent and cruel and truly affects future generations negatively.
