Dig into reading at the library's summer program

The Mancos Public Library's 2013 Summer Reading Program is "Dig into Reading." All students ages 5-12 are invited to participate in the programs, which will run on Wednesdays, June 12, 19, 26, and July 3, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

THE FUN

June 12 - Rocks are Rockin': A geology day with Fort Lewis College. David Gonzales, department head of geology at FLC, will introduce different geologic concepts with several hands-on experiences. Curious about how water moves through the earth? Ever wonder about fluorescent minerals? Do volcanos intrigue you? How about fossils? Come join us for a fun and fact-filled morning!

June 19 - Archaeology is Awesome: An archaeology day with the Anasazi Heritage Center. Archaeologist Patricia Lacey will help us construct corrugated pottery, paint a "rock" art panel, eat foods from the ancient Southwest, and teach us about the tools archaeologists use.

June 26 - Fairies, Gnomes, and Pixies, Oh My! Ashley Dove, from Beads and Beyond, will be our guide this day. She will enlighten us about fairies, make fairy or wizard wands, and create fairy houses outside on the library property. Turn on your imagination and don't miss this day!

July 3 - Jeepers Creepers, What's Below Your Sneakers? Erin Bohm from the School Garden Project will be on hand to teach us about the plants and animals that live in the ground beneath our feet. We will plant some perennials, study worms, release ladybugs, and the town will have their big diggers in the parking lot for us to scramble all over and pretend to drive. Come dressed to get dirty!

Wholesome snacks will be provided during each program. Registration required. Children younger than 5 may attend if accompanied by an adult throughout the program. We will also conduct a reading contest bingo (for kids, teens and adults) with ice-cream when it is half completed, and books of their choice as prizes for all who complete the bingo.

Questions? Please call the library at 533-7600 and ask for Kate or Amy. We look forward to an exciting summer of fun and reading!
