Dave Bennett, a clarinet virtuoso who plays electric guitar, piano, drums and sings, brings his Roots of Pop show to Cortez on April 29 for the final concert of the SouthWest Colorado Concert Association series this year, according to a news release from Lindsay Havran.

Bennett covers swing, rock ’n’ roll, country, Elvis and the Beatles.

The quartet consists of Bennett on clarinet, guitar, piano and vocals; Doug Cobb on drums; Todd Weed on piano; and Kurt Krahnke on bass.

“This show will not only showcase Dave’s clarinet, but his fine voice as well as his famous ‘rockabilly’ guitar and wild piano,” Havran said. “Backed by their full repertoire of Swing, Dixieland and Benny Goodman standards, they will branch out with Elvis, Roy Orbison and other country and rock music.”

Bennett, a Michigan native, is self-taught on the clarinet, which he said was given to him at age 10 by his grandparents. He then taught himself to play Benny Goodman songs by ear, and began the U.S. with several Dixieland bands at age 14.

The show starts Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium. Doors will open at 2:15 for season ticket holders. Season tickets for the 2017-18 concert season will be available for purchase.
