Update: Cyclist who died of heart attack south of Cortez is identified

Cyclist found unresponsive on Road G; cause of death listed as heart attack

A man who suffered a fatal heart attack while biking on Road G Wednesday evening has been identified as Roger Lee Boren, of Cortez, according to Montezuma County Coroner George Deavers.

Boren, 57, was found unresponsive on County Road G south of Cortez and died at Southwest Memorial Hospital.

The cause of death was determined to be a heart attack, Deavers said.

Emergency responders, who were called about 7 p.m. Wednesday, found a man lying in the road next to his bike in the 24000 block of Road G, said Chief Jay Balfour of the Cortez Fire Protection District.

Upon arrival, EMTs with the fire district performed CPR on Boren, said Balfour.

The victim was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he later died from “a cardiac event,” Deavers said. The man lived nearby.

Balfour said that according to the report, the man had no visible external injuries, and the bike was not damaged. The incident was described as a medical emergency.

Montezuma County Sheriff deputies and the Southwest Health System ambulance also responded.
