Katie Richards, a doctoral candidate from Washington State University, has been selected as the next Lister Fellow by the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center.

Richards’ research centers on the social and political organization of the Fremont people and the relationship between the Fremont and Pueblo cultures. Fellows are selected in alternate years and awarded $10,000 to help support the final stages of their research and the writing of their dissertations.

As a Lister Fellow, Richards’ analysis of Fremont culture will dovetail with research projects currently underway at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, such as the Northern Chaco Outliers Project. Richards will look at the relationship between the Fremont culture area and the Pueblo culture area to the south. Her work combines a fresh theoretical framework, methodologically rigorous analysis of ceramics and a multi-scalar analytical approach.

Crow Canyon awards the Lister Fellowship every two years to a graduate student who shows promise of making a significant contribution to the archaeological knowledge of American Indian cultures of the Southwest. The Fellowship honors the lives and work of Florence and Robert Lister, noted archaeologists, dedicated educators, and friends and supporters of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center.
