Lightning started a wildfire 7 miles north of Norwood Wednesday night.

The 2-acre Horsefly Park Fire is burning on the south side of Patterson Mountain in the Horsefly drainage in Montrose County, according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

It is in the Uncompahgre National Forest.

The fire has “moderate spread potential” and is smoldering and creeping in piñon, juniper and heavy logging slash. It was reported at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

About 16 firefighters are working to suppress the fire. It was zero percent contained as of 8 a.m. One Hotshot crew has been ordered.

No structure has been threatened, and no road or trail has been closed.

Fire managers reminded visitors and users of the National Forests to be attentive of their actions and surroundings, especially in areas with dry vegetation or dead and down trees. Visitors were asked to avoid the area of the fire.

The Forest Service encouraged forest users to help prevent fires by carefully tending to a campfire, using established campfire rings, picking safe and proper campfire sites, and ensuring that their fires are completely out and cool to the touch by using the drown, stir and feel methods.
