Cowboy golf shines at Rob Yates Memorial Tournament

Team Lovett captures title in annual Ute Mountain Roundup tournament

While the rodeo took center stage this weekend, for a number of cowboys, perhaps their biggest test of the weekend came on the greens of Conquistador Golf Course.

Continuing an annual tradition, 26 regional golf teams teed off in the Rob Yates Memorial Tournament on Friday.

Playing in a four-man scramble format, the tournament served to honor Yates, former chairman of the Ute Mountain Roundup rodeo. In its ninth edition, the tournament served to continue some of the big “cowboy golf” highlights.

On four holes throughout the round, competitors faced additional challenges, including cowboy poker, a roping competition, a yard nuts hole, along with washers, with teams earning opportunities to improve their score with successful efforts.

When the dust settled, Team Lovett captured the team title, which included belt buckles from Tres Rios.

However, the Ute Mountain Rodeo Roundup earned the biggest honor of the day, as all the proceeds from sponsorships benefited the ongoing legacy of Yates and the proud community tradition.
