Meth addict sentenced to 88 days in jail

District Court Judge Walker on Thursday sentenced a known meth addict to 88 days in the county jail with credit for 71 days served.

In a previous plea deal, Amanda Daves, 38, of Cortez, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Daves also faced three additional drug charges stemming from Sept. 2; a charge of attempting to take contraband, methamphetamines, into the jail; and two counts of thefts, all of which were dismissed.

Walker also ordered Daves to 24 months of probation, a mental health evaluation, 48 hours of community service and court costs and fines totaling about $3,300. Daves is expected to enter an inpatient drug rehabilitation program following her release from the county jail.

“There’s an end to my patience, and you’re there,” Walker told Daves after he thumbed through her previous arrests and convictions.

Gulity plea entered on sex charge

A 25-year-old man pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted sexual assault and third-degree assault.

The case file was not immediately available, but according to court proceedings, the plea agreement calls for Dustin Wall, address unknown, to serve 90 days in jail consecutively during a 48-month deferred sentence. Prosecutors said the victim supported the plea deal, which also requires the defendant to register as a convicted sex offender and undergo sex offender treatment.

Walker said he was not bound by the agreement when sentencing is imposed at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Plea deal rejected in assault case

District Court Judge Walker rejected a plea deal Thursday for an 18-year-old charged with third-degree assault.

Armando Paredes of Cortez was arrested on Oct. 28, 2013, and charged with a felony count of third degree assault on an at-risk victim. Walker rejected the plea deal, because the defendant had failed to previously report to jail on unrelated charges.

A three-day jury trial date is set for Sept. 3.

The pending assault charge stems from a dispute involving the defendant’s dog. Court records reveal the victim is owed $642 in restitution.

Burglar sentenced in string of thefts

A 41-year-old Dolores man was sentenced to 20 days in jail Thursday after pleading guilty in April to second-degree burglary. He was credited with seven days of time served.

“I am truly sorry,” the defendant, Mark Williams, told District Court Judge Walker. “I have learned a valuable lesson.”

Williams initially faced four felony second-degree burglary charges, a felony count for criminal mischief and a related misdemeanor offense in connection a string of burglaries that occurred last year. Williams and two co-defendants allegedly stole more than $20,000 in computer equipment, firearms, Native American artifacts and hunting equipment.

Williams was also sentenced to two years probation, ordered to a mental health evaluation and outpatient treatment, submit to random drug and alcohol testing and ordered to pay court costs and restitution. Williams was ordered to report to the Montezuma County jail to start his sentence on June 22.
