Thief granted time to pay fines

Michael Shaw, 53, of Mancos, recently appeared in court for a revocation hearing after allegedly failing to pay some $4,000 in fines and restitution in connection to unemployment fraud.

Charged with theft in a case that dates back to 2006, Shaw was granted a 12-month extension to pay his outstanding debt.

Ignacio man skips bond hearing

Marisero Pena, 32, of Ignacio failed to appear at a recent bond hearing. He’s charged with vehicular eluding, driving with a suspended license, DUI, resisting arrest, obstruction and reckless driving in connection to an incident on Nov. 25, 2014.

Man pleads guilty in car theft

Jeremy Hightchew, 23, also known as Jeremy Hurst and Jeremy Rogers, recently pleaded guilty to vehicular eluding and aggravated motor vehicle theft in connection to an incident that occurred on May 24.

In custody under a $5,000 bond, the defendant is likely to receive a cap of two years in prison when sentenced in September.

Carjacker avoids prison

Jeremiah Jim, 23, was recently sentenced to 18 months at a halfway house after pleading guilty to attempted aggravated motor vehicle theft. At sentencing, Jim asked for forgiveness, stating he must become a man and do right by God and the law.

Released from custody while awaiting bed space at the halfway house, Jim could be sentenced to six years in prison if he fails to complete his in-patient alcohol treatment.

According to police, Jim approached a man sitting in a vehicle on May 12, pounded on the window and yelled for him to exit. A confrontation ensued, but the vehicle was never stolen.

Immigrant pleads in domestic violence

Mexican citizen Yovani Sandoval Juarez, 32, recently pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor menacing charges in connection to a domestic violence incident in January.

The plea deals calls for an open deferred judgment and sentence, open probationary term, community service and forfeiture of a machete when sentenced Sept. 10.

Juarez was facing up to six years in prison and two years of parole.

The guilty plea means that Juarez is likely to be deported at an immigration hearing this fall.

A protection order for the victim, the mother of Juarez’s two children, was modified to allow for non-harassing contact at the victims request.

Forger’s probation revoked

Darrell Begay, 34, of Shiprock, was recently sentenced to 90 days in the county jail after admitting that he violated probation.

The case dates to 2003, when Begay was charged with theft and two counts of fraud. Revocation charges were filed after Begay failed to seek court-ordered alcohol treatment and pay restitution, which totaled more than $4,000.

Grand Junction man’s probation extended

Johnathan Snow, 23, of Grand Junction, recently had his probation extended for 30 days in order to allow him to complete his 100 hours of community service and pay nearly $1,500 in restitution and fines.

The case dates to 2012, when Snow was charged with criminal mischief.

Man pleads guilty in identity theft

Charles Merrill, 36, address unknown, recently pleaded guilty to identity theft after admitting that he used a stolen check to purchase a vehicle for $1,300.

In a direct sentence, Merrill was ordered to serve three years in prison to run concurrent with similar charges out of La Plata County.

Sex offender charged with failing to register

David Buck, 37, of Cortez, recently appeared in court for a revocation hearing after allegedly failing to register as a sex offender and complete sex offender treatment in a case that dates back to 2010.

If convicted of violating his probation, Buck could be sentenced to 18 months in prison. His next court appearance was set for Aug. 20.
