Stage Stores Inc., the owner of Bealls, plans to convert its store in Cortez to another of its brands, Gordmans, a discount retailer, in spring.

Blakeley Graham, manager of brand publicity for Stage Stores, said Gordmans is an off-price retailer – selling a wide variety of merchandise including apparel for the entire family, at lower prices than department stores.

The Bealls store in Cortez will be closed in spring before the Gordmans grand opening, Graham said. The conversion from Bealls to Gordmans takes less than two weeks, he said.

Current Bealls associates will be offered jobs at Gordmans. Additional associates also will be hired during a job fair in early 2020, Graham said.

Gordmans has been in business for more than 100 years.

Graham said Gordmans will feature weekly merchandise deliveries and will carry popular apparel brands, home decor, footwear, gifts, accessories, fragrances and housewares.

Stage has been converting a number of its Bealls stores to Gordmans, Graham said, because consumers have been gravitating toward lower prices.

Stage Stores, based in Houston, has 793 stores in 42 states under the Bealls, Gordmans, Palais Royal, Peebles and Goody’s brand names. Stage Stores Inc. is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange as SSI.
