The Colorado High School Activities Association unveiled the rest of the Class 2A-5A brackets on Sunday. After their victory over Elizabeth to clinch the Class 3A Region 7 title on Saturday, Montezuma-Cortez will kick off their state tournament run against No. 4 Resurrection Christian. The matchup is set for Friday at noon at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.
The No. 5 Montezuma-Cortez Panthers head into the state tournament with a 21-4 record, while No. 4 Resurrection Christian enters at 17-8. Offensively, M-CHS holds the advantage, averaging 11 runs per game compared with the Cougars’ seven. Riding a 13-game win streak, the Panthers aim to keep their momentum rolling and pull off an upset. This marks their second trip to state in the past three years, as they look to rebound from last season’s semifinal loss.
Elsewhere in the first round, top-seeded University will take on No. 8 Valley at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Butch Butler Field. The winner will face either Montezuma-Cortez or Resurrection Christian in the second round at 2:30 p.m. that same day. The victor from that matchup will move on to the semifinals, set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m., also at Butch Butler.
On the opposite side of the bracket, University High School will host Friday’s games. No. 2 Coal Ridge kicks things off against No. 7 Delta at 9:30 a.m., followed by a noon showdown between No. 3 Eaton and No. 6 The Classical Academy. The winners of those matchups will face each other at 2:30 p.m. for a spot in Saturday’s semifinal.
The Class 3A state championship game is scheduled for May 31 at 10 a.m.
Teams that fall in the first round will drop into the consolation bracket, where they’ll still have a shot at third place. The final two teams emerging from the consolation side will battle for the bronze medal on May 31 at 12:30 p.m.
