Cortez Historic Preservation Day will take place May 18, with a variety of activities and tours throughout the day.
Sidewalk tours of historic buildings and murals in downtown Cortez will be the feature of the 10th Annual Cortez Historic Preservation Day. The event is sponsored by the Cortez Historic Preservation Board in cooperation with the Cortez Cultural Center, Montezuma County Historical Society, Cortez Arts Commission and CREA. The tours will include information on the iconic Cortez Stone Block Buildings and on the murals in the downtown area.
Tours will start at 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. Sign up and meet for the free tours at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market Street or call 565-1151.
At 3 p.m., there will be a presentation by the Montezuma County Historical Society at the proposed Montezuma Heritage Museum, 35 S. Market St.
At 7 p.m., HerStory actresses will present “I Remember,” a Local Pioneer Retrospective, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.
The Cortez Historic Preservation Board was formed in 1996 to protect historic signs on Main Street. The Board advises the City Council on matters pertaining to Historic Preservation within city boundaries. The board maintains a city register of historic structures, sites, districts and signs.
