Cortez to discuss food truck regulations in forum this afternoon

The city of Cortez will host a meeting Wednesday afternoon about food truck regulations.
Allowing mobile vendors downtown would require a land use and city code amendment

The city of Cortez will host a public forum about food trucks at 2:30 p.m. today at City Hall, 123 Roger Smith Ave.

The city allows mobile food vendors in most locations – subject to some land use code restrictions. There have been requests to expand the code to allow mobile food vendors to operate in the Central Business District.

In the past, downtown restaurant owners have expressed concern with the idea. Allowing mobile food vendors downtown would require a land use code and a city code amendment.

If permitted in the Central Business District, possible parameters for food trucks include:

  • Not allowed within a specified distance of an existing restaurant.
  • Allowed only with permission of restaurants within a specified distance.
  • Allowed on private property only (vacant lots and parking lots) with owner’s permission.
  • Not allowed in public right of way.
  • Allowed only during special events.
  • No restrictions.

The City Planning Department will host the interactive public forum to help inform the decision-making on the topic. No decisions have been made.

Those unable to attend, can submit comments via email to: pio@cortezco.gov.
