The city of Cortez will start its annual street rehabilitation project in late September. This year’s project includes five different procedures:

Chip-seal overlay of existing asphalt paved surfaces in Park Ridge and Hiltsville Additions.

Cold-plane milling of existing asphalt, and filling with a new 3-inch Hot Mix Asphalt inlay will be completed on East 2nd Street, from Harrison to the east end.

North Sligo Street reconstruction between Main Street and Montezuma Avenue ­ the existing asphalt and gravel sub-base will be removed and replaced.

An 8- to 12-inch Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) of the existing asphalt paved surface to create a Stabilized Base Course (SBC) on East Empire Street with the addition of a one-inch (1”) double chip-seal overlay.

An 8- to 12-inch FDR of the existing gravel surface and sub-base on East Empire Street and Patton Street. A double chip-seal overlay of 1 inch will be applied to these gravel/SBC streets.

Each process will take approximately one week. Within the following week, the excess gravel chips will be swept up. Full Depth Reclamation is a rehabilitation technique in which the existing full flexible pavement (or gravel) surface and a predetermined depth of the underlying materials are uniformly pulverized and blended together to produce a homogeneous Stabilized Base Course. The FDR and the mill & fill processes are a cost-effective measure to lengthen the life of streets without having to completely reconstruct them.

During the construction process, people are asked not to park on the street. The contractor will attempt to notify residents prior to work in each area. Residents should be aware that, if their vehicle is not off the street, it will be towed so the work can proceed in a timely manner.
