The 21st annual Cortez Rendezvous Balloon Rally will fill the skies above Parque de Vida Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 3, offering a chance for the community to view the balloons, take part in events, fly in tethered balloons and learn more about the balloons.
The family-friendly event, which is hosted by the Cortez Retail Enhancement Association and the Cortez Parks Department, will have morning launches, a well-loved evening Balloon Glow and other activities for the community to take part in and enjoy.
The balloon rally will kick off each morning at 6:30 a.m., weather permitting, at Parque de Vida. Those who wish to see the balloons launch are invited to view pilots and ground crews prepare and inflate the balloons before they ascend into the sky. Where the balloons go will depend on wind conditions.
The event, which began in 2004, draws balloon enthusiasts and spectators from across the Four Corners region each year.
The Balloon Glow, where the balloons will light up the evening sky, will take place on Friday, Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. for that night only. The balloons will be tethered to the ground, and attendees will be able to meet the pilots and learn more about the inflation process.
Days Inn, Baymont Inn & Suites and CREA will sponsor free tethered balloon rides with Pagosa Adventures on a first-come, first-served basis. A $5 per person donation is requested for local nonprofits for the ride. Those 7 years old and up can ride after filling out a waiver.
Remote controlled model hot air balloons will also be present, and KRTZ Radio’s Kelly Turner will host a live broadcast during the Balloon Glow. The Cortez Parks Department will also host an information table with activities for kids, event details and updates on park and recreation programs in the summer.
Accessible parking is available in the Parque de Vida lot on Mildred Road, across from the Kiva School, near the Mildred Road and Empire Street intersection. No parking is permitted on Empire Street during the event.
Those interested in a hands-on experience can volunteer as ground crew by arriving at the northwest corner of Parque de Vida’s parking lot at 6 p.m. on Friday.
