Wednesday, Oct. 8

9:55 a.m. An officer responded to the Cortez City Park for a report of an intoxicated person. When one male was asked if he had alcohol he said, “You are not writing me a ticket are you? If I get one more ticket, I will have to spend six months in jail, that is what the judge told me.” The man said he knew he wasn’t supposed to have alcohol in the park. The man had a bottle of vodka that was half empty. He was given a ticket for an open container.

Wednesday, Oct. 8

10:20 a.m. An officer responded to a report of a dog bite. A man was walking down a sidewalk on North Madison when a dog inside a yard jumped up on the fence and bit his shoulder. The owner of the dog was contacted and was unaware that anyone was bit. The owner of the dog signed a routine confinement agreement and was given a citation for animals that disturb the peace.

Wednesday, Oct. 8

11:46 p.m. An officer responded to a report of a fight at a bar in the 100 block of E. Main Street. When the officer arrived, a male was lying on the sidewalk nearby in a puddle of blood. A witness stated that a white male wearing a camouflage shirt with a salt and peppered goatee punched and kicked the man multiple times. Previously, inside the bar, the injured party was not causing any problems, witnesses said, but two white males poured beer over his head. The injured male, once conscious, said he was jumped outside the bar by the pair and racial slurs were also yelled at him because he is Native American. The victim, however, could not describe the males and did not know who they were. The victim was transported to the hospital where his injuries were treated. The officer went back to the bar an spoke with the bartender and told her to call if the same men entered the bar again and asked if he could review the video surveillance at a later time. No further information or leads were available at the time.

Thursday, Oct. 9

8:21 p.m. Two officers responded to a motel in the 400 block of South Broadway regarding occupants in a room causing problems and not leaving. Officers were able to get the two individuals to gather their belongings and leave. Both appeared to be very intoxicated. Just two hours later, police received another call and one of those individuals had returned, he was arrested for trespassing after refusing to leave. The other male was arrested a short time later after also appearing back at the hotel and refusing to leave.

Saturday, Oct. 11

11:01 p.m. An officer observed a pickup truck speeding near the 400 block of East Main Street. As the officer turned his patrol vehicle around to contact the driver, the driver of the truck struck the curb near the intersection of Harrison Street. When the driver pulled over, the officer noticed the driver smelled of alcoholic beverage and his eyes were watery and speech was slurred. The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sunday, Oct. 12

10:02 a.m. An officer pulled a man over after he was driving 46 mph in a 30 mph zone. When the officer asked the man for his license, he told the officer he did not have one. The man also smelled of alcoholic beverage. When asked to exit his vehicle, the man was unsteady on his feet and swayed. Dispatch also advised the officer that the man had a mandatory protection order that stated he could not possess or consume alcohol. When the man was placed inside the police vehicle for transport, he started yelling and hitting the inside of the patrol car. The man was transported to the Montezuma County Jail after refusing to give a breath test and then threatened to urinate on the jail staff. He was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and given a summons for speeding, driving with a revoked license and violation of a protection order.
