The Montezuma County Landfill will hold a free drop-off day, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the day after Cortez’s City Cleanup Week.

But Cleanup Week is now on the list of things impacted by COVID-19, including the community street cleanup that culminates in a town barbecue.

This year, the city will collect only curbside trash that is placed in front of residences in Cortez from Sept. 14 to Sept. 18. The following Saturday, the landfill will accept trash, recyclable metals and branches.

Metals will be taken to Belt Salvage Co. and Fast Eddie’s in Cortez.

Instead of a fee based on the weight of the trash, the landfill asks for a nonperishable food item donation that will be delivered to local food pantries.

Phil Johnson, director of Public Works, asks that all items for roadside collection be tied up or placed in a bag or box.

People who are elderly or disabled can call the City Service Center at 970-565-7320 for help moving their items to the curb. The deadline for joining the list is Sept. 9.

Items that trash collectors can’t pick up during cleanup week are air conditioners, electronics, barrels containing liquid, chemicals and other hazardous waste, oil, paint, refrigerators and tires. These items must be collected separately for recycling or disposal to avoid hazardous pollution and unnecessary waste.
