12-and-under team beats Farmington White Sox 17-2, loses to 4 Corners Flyers

The Cortez Pepperjax 12-and-under baseball team split two games Friday in the Farmington Amateur Baseball Congress league.

The Pepperjax lost their opening game in Farmington to the 4 Corners Flyers 9-6, despite strong pitching from Shikayo Jones, Landin Ward and Zane Coffey, according to head coach Jason Hernandez.

The defense made a strong effort, highlighted by a double play. Short stop Art Lein fielded a ball, and tossed to second baseman Costner Hernandez, who completed the double play with a throw to first baseman Zane Coffey.

Chase York of the Pepperjax delivers from the mound against the Farmington White Sox on Friday night.

“A few first-game jitters with some mistakes that the Pepperjax couldn’t recover from led to the opening-day loss,” Hernandez said in an email.

The Pepperjax turned it around for the nightcap game, though, unleashing its bats and dominating the Farmington White Sox 17-2 in a game shortened by a mercy rule.

“Chase York dominated on the mound with a complete game, ” Hernandez said.

Next up at the Farmington Baseball Complex, the Cortez Pepperjax will face the New Mexico Thunder at 2 p.m. and the Sidewinders at 4 p.m. on May 7.
