Organizers seek public input ahead of Jan. 24 grand opening

A new community makerspace is opening in Cortez later this month, and organizers are asking for public input as they set the year’s programming agenda.

“The goal is for it to be a place for everyone in the community to learn skills, get certifications, and use equipment,” said Michelle Kardokus Rockwood, a project manager at Fundamental Needs, the Cortez nonprofit operating the space.

The idea for the Cortez Makerspace originated from a high schooler taking an entrepreneurship class at Southwest Open School. That started the process of creating a year-round workspace with access to costly tools to support creation, career development and entrepreneurship

“For example, someone could come in to make products like engraved coasters without having to buy the expensive equipment themselves – it’s a shared-space model,” Kardokus Rockwood said.

Executive Director Justice Ramos said the focus is especially on trade-school programming.

“Basically, it provides access to professional tools and equipment, like at a rec center but for tools. Members or punch-pass holders get access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines,” Ramos said.

There will be a sewing section and jewelry-making section, as well as a space for virtual reality technology for learning trade skills such as HVAC, electrical and plumbing.

Organizers envision a membership-based model, similar to makerspaces in Durango and Farmington, allowing users to pay a monthly fee to access equipment. Day passes will also be available, and organizers plan weekly workshops.

Before finalizing its schedule, the makerspace will host a community listening open house Jan. 22, where residents can provide feedback on programming and workshop ideas. A public survey will remain open through Jan. 31, and organizers are seeking volunteers and advisory board members.

A grand opening is planned for Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., when the space will formally open its doors to the public.

The space also emphasizes digital access and technology skills, including computer programming, robotics and digital design.

“Rural communities usually get left behind as the world evolves regarding technical education, we will also focus this hands-on stuff,” Ramos said.

The makerspace building, at 209 W. Main St. in Cortez, was acquired in August and has undergone renovations since. Funding has largely come through grants and fundraisers. Future goals include building out a wood shop and a commercial kitchen, though those plans depend on renovation costs, Ramos said.

Fundamental Needs, based in Cortez and led by Ramos, primarily builds and installs off-grid water systems for families without access to water or electricity on Navajo Reservation land.
