I am no supporter of pot shops or any kind of drugs, but I do believe the mayor and Cortez City Council should offer an explanation as to why a new marijuana business was denied by the mayor and council just because of six letters and 11 people speaking out against it, when 80 percent of the people objected to the Main Street medians.

Seventeen people carry enough weight to stop a pot shop when 80 percent of Cortez taxpayers had no voice in the medians. This does just does not make any sense.

I think the mayor needs to explain this.

My own thought would be that the folks that wanted to open the pot shop were just too honest to deal with our city officials, and did not offer the proper incentive to get their business approved.

If it only takes 17 taxpayers to sway our city officials’ decision, I do believe it would be easy to find many more than that who would object to the city using our tax money to buy artwork from the mayor’s good buddies. This is nothing but a way to funnel our money to the city officials’ friends. I think it is called dishonesty.

If this artwork is so great and city hall is such a good place to display it, should not the artist be paying the city or taxpayer for the space to display their wonderful work?

What percentage of the folks who live in Cortez walk through City Hall and look at the artwork, and how many of us would be ready to spend our money to buy it?

I doubt if it would be 80 percent or even 1 percent, but the city makes it 100 percent of us paying for it.

These are just a couple of examples of where the city just ignores what the residents of Cortez want for the city of Cortez. Typical of people who are in a position to serve only themselves and their buddies.

Explain this to us, mayor!
